albums of the month

Poet's Tooth by Tele Novella, 2023

I've recently become obsessed with this band, I'd heard a few of their songs before over the last several years but didn't get really into them until a few weeks ago. The singer is incredible, I'm amazed by how rounded her voice sounds. Highlights for me are Broomhorse, Eggs in One Basket, and Poet's Tooth.

Love is Overtaking Me by Arthur Russel, 2004

I found this album through the song I Couldn't Say It To Your Face which was used in the show Common Side Effects, and while it's still my favorite, the rest of the album is almost as lovely. It's nostalgic despite being entirely new to me and is summer music. Highlights are I Couldn't Say It To Your Face, Goodbye Old Paint, and Your Motion Says

How Sad, How Lovely by Connie Converse

I can't put a date on this one because it's a compilation of songs from the 50s that were never released. Connie Converse was an incredible singer-songwriter, born in 1924, who shared her music through live performance and radio shows until she disappeared in 1974. Highlights from the compilation are Talkin' Like You, Down This Road, and Empty Pocket Waltz.

6.04: creative project complete: zine

Surviving The Current: Lessons from the "Save the Whales" Movement and its Subjects

6.04: a pride fair with booths from various queer groups set up on campus today and the people from the womens' center (including a very attractive individual from my environmental studies class) had lino stamps they had made and fabric and ink to print your own patches! I made this one and put it on my backpack!

6.05: receiving reports that the majority of the population is unfamiliar with morse code. more investigation needed but if true this fact deeply disturbs my worldview.

6.06: a guy i work with decided to tell me his theory (philosophy?) about the meaning of life today and i thought it was lovely so i thought i'd share it.

as we are, as far as we can tell, the only sentient life in the universe, it is our purpose and responsibility to observe as much of its beauty and learn as much as we can about it during our brief existence

6.08: movie log: The Phoenician Scheme, 2025, dir. Wes Anderson

i found it difficult to judge this movie on its own merit having seen so many wes anderson films and being so familiar with his style. it was everything i expected it to be: dry, absurd, star-studded and symmetrical, but it still managed to catch me off guard at times. i can't say i loved it, i didn't feel particularly attached to the characters or plot despite the incredible acting and visuals, but i did particularly enjoy liesel's costume design, michael cera's accent, and the ending sequence. 4/5.

6.08: today was miserably hot, it felt impossible to do anything worthwhile until 10pm when it finally dipped below 25 C. that being said, we managed to celebrate the summer birthdays in our friend group, and i gave everyone some fun cards

6.10: movie log: Sinners, 2025, dir. Ryan Coogler

as a vampire fanatic this was a really good vampire film!! it was cheesier than i expected going in but once i adjusted to it it was a fun ride. i loved the magic of the music, especially sammie's playing (of course) and his voice was stunning. julie told me that the actor who played him, miles caton, is younger than me which is mildly fucked up but i'll let it slide. i did have some complaints about the pacing, but i enjoyed it a lot. 4/5.

6.12: movie log: Akira, 1988, dir. Katsuhiro Otomo

YES!!! YES!!!!!! i can't believe it took me so long to finally watch this, it was such an incredible film. the animation was so impressive and gorgeous, and i loved the story. i'm excited to eventually read the comics as well! 5/5.

6.13: moved out. so fucking tired but the term is OVER and i get to sleep as much as i want.

6.14: movie log: Hedwig and the Angry Inch, 2001, dir. (and starring!) John Cameron Mitchell

another movie i should have watched sooner, it's been on my list for yearssss. i loved it so much. john cameron mitchell's performance was amazing; his stage presence was perfect, and he made hedwig feel so real. the music was also fantastic, i'll definitely be relistening to it. it was so fun to see hedwig's life told through her own biased, bedazzled view. 5/5.

6.14: movie log: Waitress: The Musical, 2023, dir. Brett Sullivan

my dad has been working on a production of this show for the last few months so he wanted to see the broadway version and it was so so good! loved the music, loved the story, loved the characters. 4.5/5.

6.18: finally added other peoples' buttons to the homepage! yay!

6.19: i buried my pet budgie, emerald, who's been with us since my 9th birthday this morning. he had a long and happy life, but it still really hurt to lose him.

6.21: big life update! i moved into my new dorm at the coast today! i'll be taking classes here for the next year, it's quite exciting. the dorm itself is less than ideal in many ways but i suppose i will learn to live with it.

6.21: movie log: I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore, 2017, dir. Macon Blair

this is not a Great film, but it was exactly what i wanted to watch tonight. it's funny, campy, and existential, and elijah wood is always a joy to behold. more movies should have clinically deppressed women who accidentally kill people. and morningstars. 3.5/5.

6.24: today was my first day in my anemone research class! we got up at 5 in the morning to go to the beach and count and tag colonies of anthropleura eglantissima (aggregating anenomes), they're a super cool species. the colonies are collections of genetically identical clones that are all either male or female, and when individual polyps encounter a member of another colony, they fight, using specialized tentacles with stingers called acrorhagi. this creates borders around each colony that are called demilitarized zones. the colonies we counted ranged from dozens of individual polyps to hundreds. we also measured each colony's location along a transect and recorded photo and video that will be used to create 3d models. this will all be used in a long term monitoring project at the sites to learn more about the species. i'm very tired but very excited :3

6.30: well. it's been a bit. i've been super busy with classes and adjusting to living in a new place so i haven't been writing anything down, but there's a lot! it's so wonderful to be right next to the ocean again. on saturday, a few of us decided to go swimming in the ocean after dinner and spent most of the evening sitting out watching the sun get lower from a stone jetty in the bay. it's amazing how quickly one can adjust to new circumstances too, i was incredibly worried about my new living situation but after a week, it already feels normal. i do miss my privacy and my kitchen and my friends and my boyfriend, but this feels like where i'm supposed to be. i'll post some photos in my next update, i don't feel like uploading them rn.
